summer 2017
Melinda: I would like to find some fun and challenging ways to implement different types of grow labs/activities into my classroom.

Bernadette –In trying to incorporate more project based learning into my class, I want to see how we can use energy, water, and waste to benefit the environment that we live in. Students would take more pride in their learning and the community if they were more involved in the process of how things work and what they can do as community members.

Kitty – To create in class hydroponic and implement hands on activities for students to learn about sustainability.

Alison- I want to include more plants and green life in my classroom. I want to learn about sustainable best practices to serve as a model to my students. Possibly take over the green team. My school doesn’t teach sustainability and I feel like we are behind- this is the first year we started recycling. I want to jump start the initiative at my school.

Juanita - I have interests in sustainability and how systems work. Yesterday, I was thrilled to find this course on the ASPDP summer course list. I look forward to learning much about the functions, needs, and growth of plants and water systems.

Wendy – I need the 36 hours and I am interested in how a rooftop greenhouse classroom looks like and how it works.

Anna- To learn about hydroponic planting using stem process and incorporated inot the science stem curriculum for my class.

Shu Ying (Suzy)- I want to learn how the Hydroponic systems work and learn how to use/make one, so I can make it with my students. I want to teach my student about how our environment can be improved by using hydroponics. Showing students an alternative way to grow plants/food and be more sustainable.

Amanda- I would like to learn more about how to incorporate themes of sustainability into my current units of study in my classroom.

Kelsey-Through this course, I hope to learn to be more sustainable and do my part for the environment. Also, I love to be outdoors, so if I learn a new hobby like gardening or volunteering outdoors, that would be great as well!

Brenna-I would like to learn more about sustainability so that I can adapt my lifestyle and make realistic changes.

Ambar – I will like to find simple and practical ways to implement urban gardening in my classroom and home.

Hamesh – I signed up for this course to learn content and strategies that incorporate ideas of sustainable living practices and methods into my teaching. I want to make my students aware of how they can participate in shaping a more energy and resource efficient world.

Yolanda-I chose this course because I was never a fan of science and having taken another course focused on our environment and the foods that we eat (Heart). I found a new love and wanted to continue to look for courses and lessons that will help me , help my students love science and be more sustainable.

Surzi- As the coordinator of sustainability and the hydroponic garden teacher, I signed for this class so I can gain knowledge that I will utilize both in my class and the community the better serve my school and educate the school community because we are a PBL and we want to be more sustainable and zero waste school.

Daisy (Radmila)- (Personal) Recently, I became the sustainability coordinator at my school. My school is part of the Zero Waste Pilot program and has been chosen as one of 100 schools to uphold the zero waste initiative. For me, this course will provide me with more information on how to implement the ideas and different ways in which to incorporate the zero waste initiative in a more productive and sustainable manner. • Cristina is looking for higher level thinking skill activities that can include predictions and hypotheses. She wants to include a reflection time. She is look for ideas for more shorter hands on projects.
    • Have you ever seen Sub Irrigated Planters? They are great for classroom planting because they don't need to be watered often. Your students could easily make one in a period, talk about what they think will happen, and then you could leave it and come back to it in a week.
  • Danielle likes the idea of teaching about food chains and food webs in the classroom and incorporating group work. She is looking for connections between animals and plants, especially to teach about native americans.
  • Kelly is looking to engage students through waste and water. She wants her students to be aware of what they are using and how it impacts the Earth- especially in terms of plastic.
  • LaQuinta wants to help students understand how waste impacts them and their community. She wants to have students learn to share opinions and respond to others, possibly using connections with waste.
